PRINT DESIGN

Every magazine spread I design is unique in its own right. With each design, I seek to try something new, whether it's finding innovation inspiration or experimenting with an out-of-the-box headline package. At the same time, I make sure that my own design ambitions support the article that my spread is supposed to highlight.

PIXELS TO PEOPLE

For this design, I used a purple gradient on the background along with an Instagram gradient for the title. Additionally, I populated the spread with social media graphics meant to not only make the spread more visually appealing but also immediately communicate to the reader the focus of the article. Finally, of note, I added an Instagram-gradient circle behind the cutout of the friend group to help them pop out more.

SPORTS STANDOUTS

As a recurring feature, I designed two versions of the spread. The first (gallery pic 1), in October 2019, was done in just under a week after the previous story was scrapped due to the angle. While I liked the arrangement of the cutouts, and appreciate the work that I did in the short time frame, I also felt like the fonts and cutout dimensions could have used work. That's why, in May 2021 (gallery pic 2) when we brought the Sports Standouts feature back, I chose a more visually appealing font, and layered the cutouts onto them.

DUAL THREATS

The goal of this design was to highlight both of the quarterbacks featured in the article. With that in mind, I included two large cutouts of the players, and wrapped the text around them. For the background, I chose a red gradient that mimicked the progression in color of their helmets.

PANDEMIC VIBES

This spread, which higlighted our staffers' top music picks from the pandemic, reflected the chaos and lack of order experienced since March. After initially only having three lines of "Pandemic Vibes,"I repeated the title all the way down the spread. Additionally, I expanded the cutout of Avenue Beat as I wanted to highlight their expressions.

BEYOND THE LENS

Initially, the article for this spread was meant to be a lead-ed about ethics in photography. For that reason, I included a cutout of a photographer on the left page to accompany the text. However, when I learned that the opinion had been changed to talk about photo-sharing via social media, I adjusted the spread to reflect that. I made the background an Instagram gradient and strapped an Instagram photo frame around the cutout of the photographer.

PRINTING OUR FOOTPRINT

In line with the environmental theme of the article, I opted for a light-green background. Because we were all online, we weren't able to get photos of the article subject that were good enough to be used in the spread. Instead, I incorporated a cutout of the app on a phone, and layered the headline over it. I initially experimented with brighter colors for the headline, but ended up changing the package to white and black, like the color scheme of the app.
